Five times SAMA award winner, South African jazz giant Zim Ngqawana plays saxophone and flute and practices an art which seeks freedom through improvisation. Following his musical studies in South Africa he went on to study in the US with Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef, before returning and founding the Zimology Institute. There he nurtures young jazz players, notably young pianist Kyle Shepherd. Zim directed the ‘Drums For Peace’ Orchestra at the 1994 inauguration of Nelson Mandela and has played concerts all over the world. He is a also lecturer in Jazz Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Music School, has been artist in residence at the University of Tennessee (Knoxville, Tennessee), North Western University (Chicago, Illinois) and has been nominated for the Yale University Fellowship Programme (Conneticut, USA). // DISCOGRAPHY
